THE
ROLE OF THE BOARD

Ten
Vital Roles of Board Members in a Capital Campaign
1.
Approve the priorities to be addressed and the case for support
of the capital campaign.
2.

the organization; commit their passion and personality; and be visible
and vocal advocates for the mission, strategic plan, and capital
and program objectives of the organization.
3.
Authorize the campaign budget and staffing including any counsel
that may be retained for the campaign.
4.
Approve the campaign policies and named gift opportunities to be
used in the campaign to motivate and recognize those who give capital
gifts.
5.
Commit thoughtful and proportionate pledges/gifts (over and above
annual support for operating) prior to the solicitation of any non-Board
members. Welcome your solicitor(s) when they approach you to discuss
your gift to the campaign. 100 percent participation in campaign
giving will also encourage others who are less familiar with the
organization to give generously.

provide entree to them.
7.
Monitor progress of the campaign, especially assuring its objectives
are being met in a cost-effective manner.
8.
Support the CEO of the organization, understanding that a campaign
may require as much as 40 percent (or more) of his/her time during
the campaign period.
Optional
depending upon skills:
9.
Serve as a volunteer solicitor and/or committee member in the campaign
organization.
10.
Accept a leadership role as a division, committee, or overall Campaign
Chairperson.
